Shaista, the Indian woman who made this elephant ornament, grew up in an orthodox Muslim family. Her traditional community was ultra-conservative, which made it difficult for her to find work without discrimination.
Thanks to the help of her siblings, Shaista began working on handicrafts for Tara Projects, a Fair Trade company. She's paid a competitive wage, has health insurance and works in a clean, well-ventilated facility.
Shaista and other artisans are profiled on a new Fair Trade web site you can learn about at The Savvy Giver.
