What Condoms Can Teach Causes About QR Code Marketing

You gotta love this QR code marketing program from Planned Parenthood of Greater Northwest. They distributed 55,000 condoms to colleges in western Washington state with QR codes that when scanned went to a sex checkin site called Wheredidyouwearit.com.

During National Condom Week this month (they really have a week for everything, don’t they?), the site had 65,000 visitors and 4,500 check-ins.

In addition to being a successful program, this QR code promotion has some lessons for causes that want to use these popular black and white mazes for marketing.

Your QR code landing page needs to be mobile friendly. Planned Parenthood’s mobile page is well designed and keeps the mobile user in mind. QR codes link to web pages that need to be optimized for the tiny screen. That means your content needs to be visible without the need to pinch or expand the screen. You also have to keep images to a minimum, avoid things like Flash, which doesn’t run on Apples’s iPhone, and avoid form fields that look more like a crossword puzzle.… Keep reading

Will Your Nonprofit Pick QR Codes or NFC?

I’m dying to know, which one will you choose, QR codes or NFC?

QR codes have their advantages.

  • QR codes are offline hyperlinks that connect the offline world to online content.
  • The technology is being used by 14 million people.
  • QR codes can be put on anything and only need to be one square inch to be effective.
  • You can customize QR codes. You can make them pretty, add your logo and use every color in the rainbow.
  • You can store a lot of data on a QR code. You name it and you can encode it on a QR code.
  • You can easily track QR code scans, location and mobile device used so you analyze results and adjust your marketing campaign accordingly.

Yeah, I’m a fan of QR codes, especially since I’m writing QR Codes for Dummies.

But you might be favoring NFC or Near Field Communication.

  • NFC is a short-range broadcast technology that allows smartphones to interact with other devices when held close together.

Friends of Georgia State Parks: Taking QR Codes to the Park

I very much enjoyed speaking to your group today! There was a lot of talk and questions afterward about QR codes. Tonight, in researching for my latest book, QR Codes for Dummies, I found this story on how Fort Smith Historic Site in Arkansas is using QR codes!

It’s a great article that I think you’ll find interesting and helpful. Here’s the challenge: to get it you need to scan this QR code!

There’s a good lesson in this too. While this article is about QR codes, the magazine it was in, CRM, isn’t quite up to speed on mobile technology and hasn’t optimized its site for The Third Screen. So you might have to squint or expand the post a bit to read it. If you have an iPad or tablet, you should be able to read it easily.

If you don’t have one already, the first thing you’ll need to do is download a reader to your mobile device.… Keep reading

Cause Marketing with QR Codes. Did Chili’s and St. Jude Miss the Mark?

This is a guest post from Bob Jones of Give.mobi. For an overview of their service check out my post There She Blows! Cause Marketing, Mobile Gifts Surface with Give.mobi.

You’ve probably heard about the successful partnership between Chili’s Grill & Bar and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This longstanding cause marketing pact has raised tens of millions of dollars with its Create-A-Pepper to Fight Childhood Cancer campaign.

This year alone the campaign raised $5 million.

A new feature of this year’s campaign was a QR code on coloring sheets and table tents that took smartphone toting patrons to an information and donation page.  Including a QR code on a major campaign such as this one is impressive enough, but here’s the real news: patrons scanned the QR code a whopping 291,000 times!

Critics of QR codes take note: consumers know what QR codes are and how to access their online content.… Keep reading
