Getting Started

The goal of this page is twofold:

1.  To help you find what you’re looking for on my blog.
2.  To get you started with cause marketing.

To Find Something Specific – Right Now!

I know how difficult it can be to find something online. I spend a good part of my day on blogs and websites and am constantly frustrated that I can’t find what I’m looking for!

Here’s how not to get angry, frustrated and ultimately give up on what you’re looking for when visiting my blog.

You’ll notice that my blog doesn’t have a search bar. That’s because I haven’t found one that works well. Your best bet is to use your favorite search engine to find what you’re looking for. Here’s a tip from my webmaster Caitlin.

Type in “site:Selfishgiving.com X”. The X stands for what you are looking for (e.g. pinups, Komen, Pinterest). If I’ve written on the topic a list of posts will instantly appear!

How to Use My Categories

Each post is assigned to a category. You can see the post category right under the title. Click on it and you can view other similar posts.

Here’s a snapshot of my major categories.

Cause Practices: This is my most popular category. It has posts that discuss how cause marketing is practiced and carried out. Looking for advice on finding business partners for cause marketing? This is the category for you. Want to learn how to use QR Codes for fundraising? It’s in Cause Practices. Looking for something specific within Cause Practices? Use the search engine strategy I suggest above.

Cause Marketing in Action: This category is for current cause marketing programs I see in the marketplace. If you’re looking for some examples of cause marketing programs, this is a good stop. Another good place is my Pinterest boards on cause marketing.

Cause Marketer’s Journal: Lately, I’ve used this category to post my slides and notes from presentations. But before May 2011 and starting my own business, I used it to discuss cause marketing programs I executed at my last full-time position. The name says it all: it’s a journal of my very own cause marketing efforts.

Cause Marketing News: This category is like my own personal news wire. When I have some cause marketing news to report, I put it here.

Cause Marketing 101: This category is all about the basics. Anytime I write something introductory about cause marketing it goes here. It’s a good place to start if you’re new to cause marketing.

Capplause: Bravo! If I’m applauding a company and/or nonprofit for their recent cause marketing efforts, I’ll clap here. I even use it to pat myself on the back. If you’re looking for a top ten list of cause marketing programs or posts, you’ll find it here.

Causerants: I call these my angry posts! They also happen to be some of my most popular.

CauseTalk Radio Podcast: These are my podcast shows with co-host Megan Strand, Director of Marketing of Cause Marketing Forum.

Getting Started with Cause Marketing

Say that you’ve come to my blog wanting to learn more about cause marketing and how to get started. You were smart to start with this page. But where to next? If you’re new to cause marketing I would review my definition of cause marketing.

(Re)Defining Cause Marketing

It’s best to start with a clear understanding of what I’m talking about, as there are several competing definitions of cause marketing. Also, this post links to a lot of other posts that will further your education on cause marketing.

Next, scroll through my recent posts on the right sidebar.

Finally, I would check out some of the below posts, which are evergreen and useful to every reader. These handful of posts will link you to many more useful posts so click on the links when you see them!

I’ll be adding to this list as I find existing content to include and write new stuff, so stop by again!
