Cause Marketing Success Story: Ocean State Raises $212,000

Written on February 9, 2010 in Capplause, Cause Marketer's Journal, Cause Marketing News, Six Figure Cause Marketing

Back in December I told you about Ocean State Job Lot and their annual pinup programs to support the hospital. Despite a sputtering economy, Ocean State not only met its goal, it blew it away!

During the month of December, Ocean State Job Lot raised $212,000! That’s almost 40% more than 2008.

Moreover, these results put them on track to raise one million dollars for the hospital in just six years.

Ocean State’s tag line is The Home of Adventure Shopping. The joy and enthusiasm shoppers and employees find in their stores obviously extends to their giving!

Are you planning a cause marketing program for your nonprofit? Our work with Ocean State Job Lot helped us develop the best practices for our Six Figure Cause Marketing program. I hope you’ll check it out!

Thanks, Beth! It's been great to see their success grow over the years. We've learned a lot from how well they execute their programs in their stores. But, ultimately, it has a lot to do with them having a lot of stores with a lot of customers! Numbers mean something in cause marketing.

Hope you had a great birthday!

Well, as a native Rhode Islander, I'm tempted to say that it's because Ocean State Job Lot is AWESOME. Because it is. But I'm also tempted to say that their success is more than just numbers. Yes, pretty much every Rhode Islander shops there on a regular basis (and as someone whose entire kitchen from college until the age of 26 came from Job Lot, I can attest to this), but I think that part of it is that the people who work at Job Lot typically work there for years, and are more conscientious about asking for the donation – and you end up finding enough great deals there that it's not a problem to kick in a bit more.

    Great job, Job Lot!

Aren't they a great company, Dani? And I think you are absolutely right on their employees having a lot of longevity there and their customers not minding kicking in an extra buck to help a good cause.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting.
